Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 there is an obligation upon the insurers of the legal owner of a stolen vehicle to meet judgments against the driver of the stolen vehicle. This obligation will extend to the Motor Insurers Bureau ( MIB ) where there is no insurer. If the driver of the stolen vehicle is untraced, the MIB will deal with any claim for compensation and property damage under the Untraced Drivers Agreement Scheme.
Green Card Scheme
The MIB will act as the deemed insurer of visiting motorists for the purposes of paying claims. If the negligent vehicle was foreign registered the claim may be considered under the Green Card Scheme operated by the MIB and you may pursue a claim for compensation against the foreign motorist.
